Study Describes How Professional Development Yields “Ripple Effect”
Planning a professional development (PD) workshop?
A new study found measurable "ripple effect" results when PD was delivered in a “learning through doing” format, something we often tout in reference to our students.
The Kent State University Research Center for Educational Technology's recent study on professional development concluded that giving teachers ongoing assistance and “situative” learning yielded:
Increased technology expertise and integration for ALL participants (including the mentors)
Increased student motivation and engagement
Effective and lasting professional development based on actual needs and context
Creation of a “ripple effect” among all staff members whose curiosity and interests were peaked
The results illustrate that for teachers as well as students, learning is heightened and progress is measurable when the individual’s real life needs are addressed. The report suggests several ways school districts, delivering technology PD, could emulate the project with certain adjustments and minimal cost.
